If you are in the Fire Service, then you undoubtedly have plenty of acronyms stuffed into your mind. These acronyms play a significant role in both the learning process and in tactical decision making. Today I would like to focus on SLICE-RS, which refers to Size up, Locate the fire, Identify and control the flow path, Cool from a safe location, Extinguish the fire, Rescue, & Salvage. Before SLICE-RS, there was the acronym RECEO VES, however one does not take the place of the other. SLICE-RS is used as an initial attack sequence for first arriving companies, whereas RECEO VES is used for command priorities on a fire scene. We have had the pleasure of having Chief Doug Cline come to the department for various classes including SLICERS, so we should all be familiar with the concepts, however the following video is from ISFSI (International Society of Fire Service Instructors) and the goal is to highlight key lessons from the research conducted by NIST and UL.
